Raising A Reader is a child-driven program, based on a proven theory of change, that emcompasses early childhood educators, parents and librarians in a coordinated 'read aloud' effort. Each week, children take home a red bag filled with four high quality, developmentally appropriate, multi-cultural children's books. Families are also introduced to the local public library. Raising A Reader's mission is "to foster healthy brain development, parent-child bonding and early literacy skills critical for school success by engaging parents in a routine of daily 'book cuddling' with their children from birth to five. Raising A Reader is currently being implemented in three settings in Alleghany County: Family Resource Center, Family Literacy program through Wilkes Community College and Firehouse Kids Preschool Program.
"There is always one moment in childhood when the door opens and lets the future in. "
